Born out of the January 2021 merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA group, Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA) has emerged as a strong competitor in the electric vehicle market. Headquartered in the Netherlands, the company reported a revenue of $176.66 billion in 2022.

Stellantis N.V. (NYSE:STLA) comprises 14 brand names, including Fiat and Jeep, many of which are venturing into the EV market. CEO Carlos Tavares has announced plans to build 5 battery plants as part of the company’s strategy to invest $30 billion in electric vehicles by 2025.

Founded by Henry Ford and incorporated in 1903, the Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) reported a revenue of $136.34 billion in 2022. The company sells automobiles and commercial vehicles under its Ford brand and luxury cars under its Lincoln brand. Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) sold 1,864,464 vehicles in 2022, a drop of 2.2% from the previous year.

Volkswagen is currently the largest automaker in the world, with a reported revenue of $295.82 billion in 2022. The German car maker has set an ambitious target to overtake Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) in the global EV market by 2025 and doubled its EV production in 2021 to 452,000. To meet its targets, the richest car company in the world has set aside $100 billion for EV production expenditures to be used by 2026.

Under the umbrella of the Volkswagen group, Porsche is the most profitable car company in the luxury mass-market, with an operating profit of $7.2 billion in 2022.

2. Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:TM)

With a revenue of $279.33 billion, Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:TM) is also the largest Japanese automaker by revenue. The company’s sales of industrial equipment, particular forklifts, also boomed 25% to $12.9 billion. In 2022, Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:TM) became the top seller of cars in the U.S., marking the first time that the General Motor Company (NYSE:GM) missed out on the No. 1 spot since 1931.

Despite the devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:TM) was also the most profitable car company in the world in 2020, with $19.1 billion in profits.

With 2.45 million vehicles sold in the year, the Mercedes-Benz Group was the most profitable car company in the world in 2022. With over 172,000 employees worldwide, the German automaker reported a revenue of $158.3 billion last year.

CEO Ola Källenius has unveiled the group’s plans to increase its share of EVs to account for half of its auto sales by 2025. The company is preparing to go fully electric in the next decade.
