Trump impeachment is ‘very different’ from Watergate: Washington Post editor

Katharine Graham, publisher of the Washington Post from 1963 to 1991, gained lasting fame as the publisher of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s Watergate scandal stories, which contributed to President Richard Nixon’s impeachment proceedings in 1974.

But Graham’s daughter and Washington Post senior associate editor Lally Weymouth advised caution against continuing a tradition of impeachment campaigns against sitting presidents.

“My mother did a great job, I thought of course, in Watergate. But I think this is very different... I don’t think it’s at all the same, frankly,” Weymouth told Yahoo Finance at the 50th annual World Economic Forum in Davos.

Weymouth said widening party divisions are the primary driver of President Trump’s impeachment, rather than actual presidential misconduct.

“I think this is more like, two parties who really have major differences, which perhaps should be settled at the polls. But unfortunately are going to be settled through this impeachment process,” said Weymouth.

Despite her misgivings over the proceedings, Weymouth predict the Senate will not convict Trump. Trump has been accused of withholding $400 million in security aid from Ukraine to force a Ukrainian investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden for corruption. The U.S. House of Representatives impeached President Trump on abuse of power and obstruction of justice, making him the third President in U.S. history to be impeached. Removal proceedings in the Senate began Tuesday.

“It looks like the president will be acquitted, but I’m just speaking as an observer,” said Weymouth.
