Western Digital Makes Significant Revelations Post Hack, To Restore Account Access To Online Store By May 15

  • Western Digital Corp (NASDAQ: WDC) updated on Friday a network security hack involving its systems.

  • On March 26, 2023, WDC identified a network security hack where an unauthorized third party accessed several of its systems.

  • On April 2, 2023, WDC disclosed initiating an investigation with the assistance of leading security industry experts.

  • The company proactively disconnected its systems and services from the public Internet.

  • WDC is progressing through its restoration process, and most impacted systems and services are now operational.

  • The company's factories have been operational throughout this incident and shipped products to meet its customers' needs.

  • While initially impacted by its proactive measures, the company restored its My Cloud service on April 13, 2023.

  • Account access to Western Digital's online store also was impacted and will likely be restored the week of May 15, 2023.

  • WDC confirmed that an unauthorized party obtained a copy of its database used for its online store that contained some personal information of its online store customers. The information included customer names, billing, and shipping addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers. In addition, the database contained, in an encrypted format, hashed and salted passwords and partial credit card numbers.

  • WDC proposed to communicate directly with impacted customers.

  • Previous reports claimed WDC hackers were claiming a ransom — of a "minimum 8 figures" in exchange for not publishing 10 terabytes of data stolen from the company.

  • Price Action: WDC shares traded higher by 0.60% at $33.65 premarket on the last check Monday.
