When Antony Knights and his wife, Louise Firth, first noticed that their British Airways flight to Berlin from London’s Heathrow airport was listed as delayed, they were neither surprised nor very concerned. The experience of the couple — who had planned the trip to Berlin since September — has become increasingly common for airline passengers as the companies have been hit with repeated IT failures. Carriers in Germany’s Lufthansa Group in February had to cancel around 200 flights after construction workers severed a fibre optic cable vital for the group’s booking systems.

If you, like many economists, believe that the U.S. is headed for a recession this year, you may wonder when to sell cyclical stocks. Cyclical stocks rise and fall with the economy. In good economic times, cyclical stocks perform better. And when things are tightening, it may be time to look for the best cyclical stocks to sell. Southwest Airlines reported another loss in the first quarter, trying to shake off a brutal holiday period that saw the U.S.’s second largest airline suffer a massive operations letdown.
Last winter, seasonal storms decimated flight schedules proving the need for infrastructure improvements for the Federal Aviation Administration's systems. Moreover, as airlines faced pilot and other labor shortages, passengers have noticed an ongoing decline in the quality of U.S. air travel from flight delays, cancellations, and even engine fires. In an interview with Yahoo Finance's Julie Hyman, Brian Sozzi and Brad Smith, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said, "Air traffic control staffing is not the main reason for cancellations and delays, but it is a factor." Buttiegieg adds that to keep that factor from growing, "we've got to have the tools to invest in the people and invest in the technology to modernize FAA systems. Many of these are legacy systems. They've obviously done an incredible job... but that's not something that's just going to keep going on its own." As the Covid-19 crisis initially capsized global societies, many daring investors targeted travel stocks to buy for the long haul. Their thinking centered on the eventual comeback effect. Once government restrictions faded, people who developed cabin fever would want to get out of the house. Known colloquially as revenge travel, this phenomenon bolstered several travel-related enterprises. In 2023, it’s possible that we can see another last hurrah for certain travel stocks to buy. To be sure, co

Because of the debacle, between Dec. 1 and Dec. 28, LUV stock lost 20% of its value. Fortunately for its shareholders, LUV stock has bounced back a little. It’s up nearly 9% through the first seven weeks of 2023. Despite the rebound, Southwest’s share

Southwest Airlines reported a loss for the fourth quarter, as the company took an $800 million pretax hit to earnings due to the computer system failure that led to the airline’s holiday travel meltdown.
The cancellations left thousands of passengers and staff stranded during the holidays.
It’s been a roller coaster ride for airline stocks in recent weeks. Most notably, the Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV) debacle made investors think about other airline stocks to buy. On Jan. 11, the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) grounded all domestic flights after its Notice to Air Missions system failed. The glitch in the system kept planes grounded for nearly five hours. Airline stocks appear to have been unharmed by the groundings. The U.S. Global Jets ETF (NYSEARCA:JETS), which is the d
