Since 1995, the gross merchandise value of the cross-border e-commerce giant, Amazon, has been expanding. In 2020, Amazon's net profit reached $8.1 billion, a 220% increase from the previous year. But did you know that Amazon's original name wasn't Amazon? Changing a company's name might seem easy, but it's actually very challenging, and many entrepreneurs struggle with it for a long time.
Amazon was initially called "Cadabra, Inc.," derived from the magic spell "abracadabra," implying that the business would grow as if by magic. However, after a lawyer misheard "Cadabra" as "Cadaver" (meaning corpse), Amazon founder Jeff Bezos realized the name was not very auspicious and recognized the need for a change. He decided to choose a name starting with 'A' to appear early in alphabetical listings.
He went through the dictionary word by word until he finally selected "Amazon," because the Amazon River is the largest river in the world, aligning with Jeff Bezos' aspiration for Amazon to become the world's largest online bookstore. Thus, the Amazon River became the original trademark for Amazon.
The Amazon logo also contains an Easter egg; the orange arrow is actually a smile, hoping all customers are satisfied with Amazon's services. The arrow pointing from A to Z represents that we sell goods from A to Z, showcasing its diversified business.
