Google's Cell Network Provider Suffers Data Hack Bearing Connection To T-Mobile's Latest Breach

  • Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGLGoogle's cell network provider Google Fi was hit by a data breach related to the recent T-Mobile US, Inc (NASDAQ: TMUS) hack.

  • Google said that the primary network provider for Google Fi disclosed suspicious activity relating to a third-party support system containing a "limited amount" of Google Fi customer data.

  • The timing of the notice and Google Fi's use of a combination of T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular for network connectivity hinted at links to the most recent T-Mobile hack.

  • Google says the hackers accessed limited customer information, including phone numbers, account status, SIM card serial numbers, and details about customers' mobile service plans, TechCrunch reports.

  • Google said that the hackers did not take customers' personal information or payment card data, passwords, PINs, or the contents of text messages or calls.

  • TMUS identified a data hack on January 5 for 37 million current postpaid and prepaid customer accounts.

  • The hacker stole data, including names, billing addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, T-Mobile account numbers, and information such as the number of lines on the account and plan features.

  • The company said there might be "significant expenses" in connection with this most recent incident.

  • Price Action: GOOG shares traded lower by 0.55% at $99.32 in the premarket on the last check Tuesday.
