Air France, Lufthansa Group airlines part of EU greenwashing probe

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Air France, its Dutch arm KLM, Norwegian, SAS and several Lufthansa Group airlines are among 20 carriers being investigated by the European Union for potential greenwashing, the companies said on Thursday. The EU said airlines needed to make clear to what extent claims about tackling aircraft CO2 emissions - whether by offsetting them with climate projects or using sustainable fuels - can be substantiated by sound scientific evidence. The Lufthansa Group airlines under investigation are Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Air Dolomiti and Eurowings, the group said on Thursday, while a spokesperson for Air France-KLM confirmed the group was also part of the probe.

Dutch court to rule in KLM 'greenwashing' case

A Dutch court was set to rule on Wednesday on a lawsuit alleging that KLM misled customers with an advertising campaign aimed at improving the company's environmental image, in a case of so-called "greenwashing." KLM, which does not dispute that air travel contributes to global warming, denied misleading customers with the "Fly Responsibly" campaign, which it said was well-intentioned attempt to draw attention to the problem. The suit, brought in 2022 by environmental group Fossil Free, argued that there is no way to "Fly Responsibly" as long as air travel is a major contributor to carbon dioxide emissions.
