UPDATE 1-Canada MPs to hold hearings on Russian titanium sanction waivers

Canadian legislators on Wednesday agreed to hold hearings into how major aerospace companies were granted exemptions from the country's sanctions on Russian titanium. Canada is the first Western government to ban Russian supplies of the strategic metal as part of a package to mark the second anniversary of Russia's Ukraine invasion in February. The 12-person foreign affairs committee of the House of Commons elected chamber said it would call the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs and other unspecified witnesses, after a proposal to have representatives of Bombardier and Airbus testify failed.

UPDATE 2-Embraer counters report of new jet, says no major capex plan

Brazilian planemaker Embraer on Wednesday played down a report that it is studying a new jet to compete directly with Boeing and Airbus, saying it has no plans for a major cycle of spending. The Wall Street Journal reported that the world's third-largest planemaker is exploring options for a narrowbody jet to break out of its regional niche and "compete head-on" with the best-selling Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo families.

Airbus ready to lock out A220 workers if offer rejected

Airbus is ready to lock out its Canadian A220 workers if a latest contract offer is rejected on Wednesday, according to sources and a conciliator's recommendations seen by Reuters. Airbus and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union (IAM) agreed to conciliation after the company's estimated 1,300 Montreal-area A220 workers rejected two offers and a tentative agreement. Recommendations from a conciliator in the Canadian province of Quebec's labor ministry noted that Airbus will "exercise its right to lockout on May 2" if a contract is not reached by that date.
