Bernard Looney spent the last 32 years crafting a near-perfect career at BP. The Irish chief executive resigned with immediate effect on Tuesday evening, shortly after the Financial Times reported that he was due to leave the company after failing to disclose past romantic relationships with colleagues. BP has declined to detail the nature and number of Looney’s romantic relationships with colleagues.
Helge Lund, the chair of BP, has ruled himself out as the oil giant’s next chief executive, as he rushed to reassure shareholders it was “business as usual” following the abrupt departure of boss Bernard Looney. Lund, a Norwegian former chief executive of Equinor, has told investors in a series of emergency meetings that he will remain chair and will not replace Looney, BP confirmed on Thursday. Looney quit BP on Tuesday after admitting he had failed to disclose the extent of past relationships with staff.
