Santos Ltd urged South Korea on Thursday to invest in Australian gas combined with carbon capture and storage to help meet South Korea's needs until 2050. Its imports are expected to peak in 2039 at just over 48 million tonnes a year and then ease to about 42 million tonnes by 2050, Santos Chief Executive Kevin Gallagher said at an energy security conference in Seoul. "This is a great opportunity for trade and investment in Australian LNG, to deliver energy security and cleaner energy for Korea for another three decades," he told the conference hosted by South Korea's government, according to a copy of the speech issued by his company.
A gas seller that supplied 7% of the eastern Australian market has collapsed due to soaring global gas prices, the first significant casualty in the country from the global gas supply crisis due to sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. The Essential Services Commission on Tuesday suspended private gas retailer Weston Energy from the wholesale gas market for failing to meet financial security requirements and said the company's 184 large and medium-sized customers would be shifted to other suppliers. The collapse of Weston Energy underscores energy price concerns set to face Australia's new Labor government, as it pushes to rapidly expand renewable energy to replace gas and coal over the next eight years.
Santos Ltd played down on Friday an Alaska road access dispute with ConocoPhillips, saying their feud was not slowing work on the $3 billion Pikka oil project or the Australian gas producer's efforts to sell its stake in it. Santos rejected a proposal by ConocoPhillips to charge $95 million for long-term access to roads on the U.S. oil and gas producer's Kuparuk River Unit (KRU) oil fields, next to the Pikka project run by Oil Search, which Santos acquired last year.
