U.S. stock indexes were a mixed bag on Monday, with the S&P 500 staying shy of its March record high as investors waited for key inflation readings and earnings reports due this week while a survey showed consumers concerned about inflation. A Federal Reserve Bank of New York survey, released on Monday, found that Americans see inflation at 3.3% a year from now from March’s 3% while they expect inflation three years from now at 2.8%. The Nasdaq composite was advancing while the S&P 500 slipped.
Stocks gave up gains on the Dow Jones and S&P in afternoon trading. A vaccine stock gained nearly 50%.
A flurry of sudden posts from Reddit folk hero Keith Gill has sparked the busiest trading day for GameStop since 2022. Before 1 p.m., 97 million GameStop shares had traded hands on Monday. AMC Entertainment saw even higher volume, with 179 million shares traded, the most in a single day on record for the movie theater stock.
