UPDATE 1-US to determine cause of Southwest, FedEx jetliners near-miss incident

The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a June 6 hearing to determine the probable cause of a February 2023 near- miss incident involving a FedEx cargo plane and a Southwest Airlines jet in Austin, Texas. The two planes nearly collided when the FedEx Boeing 767 was forced to fly over the Southwest jet to avoid a crash in poor visibility conditions. It was one of at least half a dozen near-miss incidents last year that raised concerns about U.S. aviation safety and the strain on understaffed air traffic control.

US to determine cause of Southwest, FedEx jetliners near miss incident

The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a June 6 hearing to determine the probable cause of a February 2023 near miss incident between a FedEx cargo plane and a Southwest Airlines in Austin. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said last year the planes came within about 115 feet of each other in poor visibility in what could have been a "terrible tragedy." The FedEx plane's first officer saw a single light in the fog from the Southwest 737 and then a silhouette of the plane before the crew aborted their planned landing on the same runway, Homendy said.

UPDATE 1-US watchdog to review FAA oversight of United Airlines maintenance

The U.S. Transportation Department Office of Inspector General (DOT OIG) will audit the Federal Aviation Administration's oversight of United Airlines maintenance practices, the agency watchdog said on Thursday. "We will evaluate FAA’s actions to address maintenance non-compliances and violations at the air carrier," the DOT OIG said on its website. Over the past five years, the inspector general has issued several audit reports and recommendations on FAA’s oversight of maintenance at Allegiant Air, Southwest Airlines, and American Airlines and is currently reviewing SkyWest Airlines.
