Canadian First Nation blockades disrupt Obsidian Energy's operations in Peace River

Oil and gas producer Obsidian Energy said on Wednesday that blockades by Canada's Woodland Cree First Nation forced it to shut in production at two of its sites amid an ongoing dispute with the Indigenous community. The company said that the first blockade took place near its Walrus field asset on May 5, forcing a production shutdown. The blockade later shifted near the entrance of its Harmon Valley South (HVS) field operation on May 11, Obsidian said.

Canadian First Nation rejects Obsidian Energy drilling expansion plans

Canada's Woodland Cree First Nation has rejected oil and gas producer Obsidian Energy's proposal to expand drilling operations on its traditional territory, the Indigenous community said in a statement on Monday. The formal notice that Woodland Cree's chief and council have rejected Obsidian's drilling plans mark a further breakdown in relations, after the First Nation initially raised concerns about the company's activities on their territory in northern Alberta in February. The community urged Obsidian to address their concerns about a series of earthquakes in their territory in late 2022 and early 2023, that regulators said Obsidian were responsible for.

UPDATE 1-Canadian First Nation sends notice of opposition to Obsidian Energy drilling plans

A Canadian First Nation on Wednesday said it has told the Alberta Energy Regulator that oil and gas producer Obsidian Energy cannot proceed with plans to expanded drilling on its territory due to concerns about earthquakes. The Woodland Cree First Nation in northern Alberta criticized Obsidian earlier this week for failing to address the Indigenous community's concerns about a series of earthquakes that regulators found were caused by the company's wastewater disposal. Calgary-based Obsidian produces roughly 31,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd).
